This highly acclaimed singer/songwriter, best known for his music with Cockney Rebel, was a key influence on British bands such as Blur and Suede. Harley formed Cockney Rebel in the early 1970s after starting out playing in bars, folk venues and the London Underground. The 1975 album, The Best Years of Our Lives, spawned the classic Make Me Smile (Come Up and See Me). The single reached number one and went on to sell over a million copies. According to the Performing Rights Society, it’s one of the most played songs in British broadcasting. Harley’s other top twenty singles with Cockney Rebel include Judy Teen, Mister Soft and Mr Raffles (Man, It Was Mean). His 1986 duet with Sarah Brightman, the title song of The Phantom of the Opera, was a global hit.
In the early 1990s, Harley released several solo albums. His songs Sebastian, Tumbling Down, and Make Me Smile (Come Up and See Me) were included in Todd Haynes’ 1998 glam rock musical Velvet Goldmine. Make Me Smile was also included in the hugely successful British film comedy, The Full Monty. In 1999, he presented BBC Radio 2’s The Sounds of the Seventies, which ran until 2008.
In 2005, The Quality of Mercy album was released under the Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel name, and Harley began touring more frequently, although mainstream success remained elusive. In recent years, Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel have played Glastonbury Festival three times, the Isle of Wight festival and many of Europe's major rock festivals. Last year, Steve received a Special Award from Childline Rocks for his work for charity, at the Classic Rock magazine Awards.
