Special guests: Rob da Bank and Penny King
A great evening and certainly one of the best space events so far. Hayley spoke to a great line up from the world of music; internationally popular club and Radio 1 DJ 'Rob da Bank', and music officer for the South East region of the Arts Council England 'Penny King' . Thanks goes to our new resident photographer Andy Vella, and singer/songwriter Beccy Nelson for performing at the very last minute with She Makes Music.
Rob da Bank
Sunday Best Recordings and internationally popular club and Radio 1 DJ Rob da Bank discussed the origins of the label, and how it grew from a weekly Sunday night club based in London. He told us of Sunday Best’s aims and its eclectic mix of artists. Rob’s modest and laid back persona came across, together with his honesty, as well as his strong sense of humour. The revealing interview also discussed how the innovative Isle of Wight based festival, Bestival, began and the possibilities for its expansion. And it was a great surprise when Rob announced that a lucky raffle draw winner would get a pair of tickets!
Marking 10 years of Sunday Best Recordings, which introduced the world to Groove Armada and Lemon Jelly, the eclectic label's founder joins us for a special appearance. As well as being one of the world's most popular club DJs, Rob can be heard on BBC Radio 1 at midnight on Sundays. He has worked in music since the early 90s, and was Muzik Magazine's Assistant Editor before launching Sunday Best, a pioneering leftfield club night, which featured DJs such as Fatboy Slim and Basement Jaxx. Taking the club on the road, Rob hosts stages at festivals, such as Glastonbury, and Sunday Best holds legendary parties at Ibiza each summer. He also runs Bestival; the innovative Isle of Wight based music festival.
Penny King
Penny King gave us an insight into the work of the Arts Council England, which marks 60 years in 2007. Many of the attendees had an interest in what the organisation has to offer. It was an insightful and informative interview, and she told Hayley and the audience of around 50 people how the Arts Council could offer valuable help, particularly with funding.
Penny is the Music Officer for the South East region of the Arts Council England, the organisation that works to get more art to more people in more places by developing and promoting the arts across England, acting as an independent body at arm’s length from government. As well as giving an insight into the Arts Council, Penny will be a great guest for providing advice for musicians and promoters regarding funding and development. Penny’s previous jobs include tour programming and production as Producer for the Contemporary Music Network and Programme Manager for the Asian Music Circuit, working with artists such as Ravi Shankar and and Spring Heel Jack.
