John Mollo - Star wars' Oscar winning costume designer

Marking Star Wars' 30th anniversary, we had a special appearance from the original trilogy's Academy Award winning Costume Designer, and John bought along one of his Oscars! He told Space presenter Lisa Holloway how he conceived the look for characters, such as Darth Vader, Princess Leia and Luke Skywalker, as well as the stormtroopers. A warm and self-deprecating interviewee, he gave a fascinating insight into collaborating with George Lucas on his first trilogy. He also recalled his appearance at the Oscar ceremony, which included being led through a labyrinth like corridor before being interviewed by the world's press.

Certainly an unassuming guest, Jo told us how she eventually broke into stand up comedy, after a year on the dole and working in a supermarket. The comedian explained that she initially was given unpaid five-minute stand up slots before being allowed longer stints over the next couple of years, thus gradually becoming established on the circuit. She described her admiration for Billy Connolly, which is partly due to his working class background, and mentioned funny females, such as Jessica Stevenson, Julie Walters and Victoria Wood. Jo's amusing anecdotes included recalling a gig in which she, without realising, had a nosebleed on stage and managed to smear blood all over her face and shirt. ,/p>

"..One of the most gifted comic talents I've ever seen.." - Peter Kay
"..She is a marvellous mimic, a good character actress and a genuinely funny stand-up comedian.." - Daily Express

Stormtroopers

Special thanks to The United Kingdom Garrison of the 501st Legion for providing a squad of Star Wars stormtroopers, which certainly enhanced the event. This is the UK's foremost Star Wars costuming group, and their reputation has grown over the last few years, built on the high standards of costuming, and dedication to professionalism. Their volunteers take pride in the costumes authenticity and endeavour to stay in character whenever in costume. They have worked with some of the biggest Star Wars names, and have added "colour" to many marketing and promotional activities for Lucasfilm and their companies. As the 501st Legion and their Garrisons are a "zero profit" entity, they do not charge for our appearances, although they ask that a donation be made on their behalf to their nominated charities. Our thanks go to Richard Bown and Nerissa Baseley for their valuable help.
